Taliban Utilized Discarded UK Equipment to Locate Local Nationals That Served Alongside Western Troops, Investigation Is Told
An informant has disclosed an official investigation that the UK left behind confidential technology enabling the Taliban to track down local individuals who worked with allied troops.
Information Leak Endangers Thousands in Danger
Person A, known as Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the data leak were instructed to change residences and alter their phone numbers to avoid detection from the Taliban.
MPs are investigating official response of a serious breach of private information concerning almost nineteen thousand individuals who had requested to relocate to the UK to escape militant rule.
The Information Breach Occurred
A spreadsheet with their personal data, comprising identities, phone numbers and occasionally household data, was inadvertently disclosed by a staff member working at special operations center in February 2022.
The incident came to light only in August 2023, when the names of several individuals who had sought to move to Britain appeared on online platforms.
Regime's Resources
“There seems to be a false assumption that the Taliban are without the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” she told the committee.
Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they have it. Should they obtain mobile details, they can trace your precise location. That's precisely what intelligence groups did.”
During testimony about whether the Taliban had access to sophisticated technology, Person A declared: “They possess all resources.”
Aftermath of the Data Breach
Early investigations provided to the committee suggested that no fewer than forty-nine family members and colleagues of people concerned by the breach had been murdered.
A superinjunction about the breach was enacted in last year and prevented relevant facts concerning it from public disclosure until recently.
Safety Measures
Because she was restricted, Person A and the aid group she was working with told affected households they were assisting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.
“We advised that they relocate when possible and changed their mobile numbers. These represented the crucial data that, if the Taliban had access to these details, would cause their location being found,” the source testified.
Contested Findings
The source disputed that internal investigation conducted by a former official had been mistaken to determine that the possession of the information by militant forces was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.
“The important fact is that these individuals are in hiding from the Taliban; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”
She detailed disturbing violence suffered by concerned people, comprising electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.
“We have had four-year-old children who have had their arms broken to pressure the family to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
