Senegal's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

As I walk into the space, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after our chat. It’s a simple symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and natural ability won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his career in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Season and European Arrival

That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to victory and earning best player.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, after being sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Currently, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the main top prize in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the game.
