Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Prison Memoir Detailing Three Weeks In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a book next month titled A Prisoner’s Diary, detailing his time spent in custody.

This news emerged less than two weeks after the ex-leader was released while he appeals the court ruling for unlawful coordination in a case to obtain election campaign funds provided by the leadership of former Libyan leader.

Life Behind Bars: Solitary Musings

“In prison visibility is limited, and activities are scarce,” he writes in a preview, implying the memoir will focus on his thoughts from solitary confinement instead of extensive analysis on the packed and struggling correctional facilities in the country.

“Quiet is absent, which is missing at the prison, where there is endless commotion,” he states. “The racket is alas constant. But, just like the desert, personal reflection is fortified in prison.”

Freedom Plea: Recounting the Hardship

During his plea for freedom, the former leader participated via screen from inside the facility, characterizing his incarceration as gruelling. He had told the court: “I want to pay tribute to all the prison staff, showing great humanity, and who have made this nightmare tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I never imagined at this stage of life, I would end up incarcerated. It’s an ordeal forced upon me. I admit it’s difficult, it’s very hard. It affects one on any prisoner because it’s gruelling.”

Historical Context

He, who served as France’s president for a five-year term, set a precedent as ex-leader of an EU country and the first postwar leader of France to be incarcerated.

Ahead of his incarceration he declared he intended to spend the period to write a book.

Books in Prison

Unconfirmed is if he found the opportunity to go through the volumes he took into prison: a two-volume biography of Jesus and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the famous story, where an innocent man is sentenced to jail but escapes to exact retribution.

Prison Conditions

Sarkozy was placed in solitary confinement to protect him in a room approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom in the Paris jail located in the capital. Security personnel were stationed in an adjacent room.

Reports indicated that he consumed only yoghurts while inside worried that prison cuisine may have been contaminated. Although he had access to prepare his own meals but he turned this down, based on unnamed sources. Not known is if he will detail his dietary choices.

Legal Perspective

His attorney, who saw him regularly daily while he was in prison, told the release hearing security would be better released rather than in custody. “He received threats against his life, listened to yells during nighttime and emergency responses in an adjacent room during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Charges and Sentence

Sarkozy went to prison last month after a Paris court imposed a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges over a scheme to secure election financing during his election campaign.

He denies wrongdoing challenging the decision, and a fresh trial set for early next year.
