The beloved crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The previous season concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but official word only came this week.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the time there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
