Eurovision Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Become a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.
A new term surfaced a couple of months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, per insights from health professionals such as paediatricians. Typically, it is unusual for doctors to care for a child who has seen the death of their entire family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of young amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal in scores of doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.
An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that genocidal acts are continuing. Officials has denied these allegations, just as it disavows everything it is accused of. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, apparently, is what unity manifests as.
Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems treated differently.
A Double Standard
Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering
The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it was formerly known for. A contest that was originally built on togetherness has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
